Control4 vs Savant vs Crestron vs Lutron: An Installer's Take

Every client asks the same question after the first walkthrough: which smart home platform should I pick? Here's the unvarnished version. We build on Control4 and Lutron, and here is the honest reasoning behind that, platform by platform.

Lutron: the lighting standard

If your project is primarily about lighting and shades, Lutron is the answer. Nothing else competes on reliability or dimming quality. The RadioRA 3 platform is a strong fit for larger homes; Caseta covers smaller projects. Where Lutron falls short: full whole-home automation. It's a lighting system, not a control system, which is exactly why we pair it with Control4.

Control4: the all-rounder

Control4 is the workhorse for integrated whole-home installs. Strong dealer network, deep AV integration, and a mature platform. The downside people cite: a UI that can feel dated in places, and you're tied to a dealer for future changes. In practice, that dealer relationship is the point. It is who you call when you want to add a zone, and it is why we stand behind it.

Savant: the polished contender

Savant has one of the best end-user apps in the category. If how the system feels is the priority, Savant makes a strong case. The trade-offs: a smaller dealer network and tighter Apple integration that turns into a downside in an Android household.

Crestron: the top of the market

Crestron is what you find in the largest custom estates and corporate boardrooms. Custom-programmed and infinitely flexible, it is genuinely premium and priced to match. For the vast majority of homes, it is more system than the project needs.

Our default recommendation

For most homes we work in, we recommend Control4 + Lutron as the integrated stack. Control4 handles AV, climate, and control; Lutron handles lighting and shades. The two integrate cleanly, everything runs hardwired at the core, and the long-term support story is the strongest of the options for a home you plan to keep.
